The book examines the various aspects of Hungary’s political system from an internal perspective and offers a sober analysis. Under the guiding question “Is Hungary an autocracy?”, historical backgrounds such as the Habsburg monarchy, goulash communism, system change and democratisation are examined, which are of great importance for current developments in Hungary. A particular focus is on Viktor Orbán’s concept of the state, which has led to a fundamental reorganisation of the system since 2010. In ten chapters, the book analyses how the concept of National Cooperation (NER) influences political institutions, legislation and foreign policy and how it affects the articulation of the interests of minorities and Hungarian civil society. Finally, various scenarios for the further development of the country are presented.
