The review procedure of the open access journal M&K – Medien und Kommunikationswissenschaft [Media and Communication Studies] corresponds to the peer review which is well-established in scientific practice. Submitted manuscripts are anonymised by the editor upon receipt. The author is neither known to those participating in the review process nor to the editorial staff. Upon receipt of a new manuscript, the members of the advisory team (the expert groups DGPuK – Deutsche Gesellschaft für Publizistik und Kommunikationswissenschaft [German Society for Journalism and Communication Studies], the SGKM – Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaft [Swiss Society for Communication and Media Studies], and the ÖGK – Österreichische Gesellschaft für Kommunikationswissenschaft [Austrian Society for Communication Studies] will delegate one person each to the team) will be informed of the title and abstract of the anonymised offer and invited to suggest reviewers; they are also allowed to suggest themselves.
On the basis of these and other suggestions, the editorial team decides to whom the manuscript will be forwarded and which external reviewers will be requested. The central selection criterion is the respective candidates’ professional reputation and scientific expertise on the subject matter. These are usually postdocs and professors; however, we occasionally ask doctoral candidates conducting intensive research on a subject to provide their expert knowledge. The final selection is made by the editor; being informed of the identity of the author, only he or she can assess whether the relationship between author and reviewer is too close. Other considerations factor as well, such as the wish to distribute the work amongst as many people as possible and, on the other hand, enabling as many community members as possible to take part in the selection process.
Usually, two external reviews are requested. In addition, one or two members of the editorial staff will review the manuscript. Thus, there will be at least three votes on a manuscript available. On this basis, the editorial staff, as a team, decides on whether to accept the manuscript or whether it requires revision or resubmission. This decision is summarised in an editorial decision and communicated to the authors in addition to the reports that form the basis of the decision. The decision is also communicated to the external reviewers and to those who took part in the final vote at the end of the review process. The editorial staff aims to conclude the review process within eight weeks of receipt of the manuscript. Should this not be possible, the authors will be informed.
All submitting parties are required to affirm that they are offering an original manuscript that has not been otherwise published or submitted for publication. If any suspicion should arise, the reviewers will personally make inquiries or request that the editor do so.
Since the reports are required to contain detailed criticisms, cases in which the rules of good scientific practice have been violated are easily identifiable. In such cases, the editor will contact the reviewer and request an examination of whether the criticism can be substantiated or phrased in a more appropriate manner. If necessary, unlawful remarks will be deleted before the editor forwards the (anonymised) report.
