Swiss Journal of Business

About

Founded in 1947 as Die Unternehmung: Zeitschrift für Betriebswirtschaft und Organisation, the Swiss Journal of Business (SJB) is a peer-reviewed (double-blind), open access business journal. With its concept of combining theoretical standards and practical relevance in high-quality scientific articles, it is one of the leading European journals in the field of business administration.

The scope of the journal covers all disciplines of business administration as well as interdisciplinary topics that broaden the horizon of business research and practice.

The SJB aims to disseminate new findings in business research, to draw attention to important problems in society, research and business practice, to set research agendas, to present scientifically sound solutions and generally to promote the exchange between science and practice.

The SJB is published four times a year:

  • articles that explore a current business problem in practice, place it in a scientific context and set a research agenda for it,
  • Scientific contributions of an original nature that have not been published before. These include theoretical and conceptual contributions as well as the results of empirical studies,
  • Research contributions from working groups and scientific commissions,
  • Interdisciplinary dialog contributions on current topics.

The quality of the articles is ensured by a double-blind peer-review process according to international standards. The reviewers are experts in their respective scientific disciplines. In most cases, they are scientists with a business background. Approximately every second submitted manuscript is accepted for publication. As is customary with scientific journals, there are usually several rounds of review. The time from submission to publication varies widely, but typically takes between ten and 18 months.

Publications Ethics

Quality Guidelines

The aim of the Swiss Journal of Business is to disseminate new findings in business research, to draw attention to important problems in business practice, to present scientifically sound solutions for practice, and generally to promote the exchange between science and practice.

The publication of original articles includes the following categories:

  • articles that explore a current business problem in practice, place it in a scientific context and set a research agenda for it,
  • Scientific contributions of an original nature that have not been published before. These include theoretical and conceptual contributions as well as the results of empirical studies,
  • Research contributions from working groups and scientific commissions,
  • Interdisciplinary dialog contributions on current topics.

Pure company presentations or descriptions of business problems without a problem-solving component will not be published.

Obligations of Authors, Publishers and Editors

Authors must confirm that they are submitting an original manuscript that has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere.

Manuscripts submitted for publication in the Swiss Journal of Business may not be offered for publication elsewhere until the peer-review process has been completed.

The editors decide on the publication of articles on the basis of the quality and suitability of the article for the journal; the publisher has no influence on this.

Each manuscript submitted by potential authors to the Swiss Journal of Business is evaluated using a double-blind review process. The reviewers are experts in the respective scientific disciplines. In most cases, they are academics with a business background. As the reviews must contain detailed criticism, cases where the rules of good scientific practice have been violated are easily identified.

In the event of a conflict of interest, the Editor-in-Chief will ask one of the Editors to coordinate the review process for a submitted article. He/she also deals with conflicts of interest involving staff, authors, reviewers and editorial board members.

As is typical for scientific journals, there are usually several rounds of peer review. While the first-round reviews are sent back to the authors within three months, the time from submission to publication varies widely, but usually does not exceed 12 months.

In order to promote scientific discourse and cumulative research, as well as to ensure quality, the editors emphasise the importance of creating the greatest possible transparency with regard to the data used in the peer review process.

When submitting the manuscript, the authors of empirical contributions undertake to document sufficiently the way in which the data were collected and/or the data sets provided by third parties (e.g. databases) in order to make the research results replicable and to enable secondary analyses. At the same time, they agree to make the data used available for further scientific analysis as far as possible.

Authors wishing to publish in the Swiss Journal of Business are advised to consult the author information available here before submitting their manuscript.

Authors are not required to pay article processing charges (APCs).

To avoid plagiarism, authors must clearly indicate in their manuscript if content is taken from other sources. Authors must ensure that their contribution does not contain any defamatory information and does not violate any copyrights or other intellectual property rights or other rights of third parties.

The order of authorship should be determined jointly by all co-authors. The list of authors should accurately reflect who wrote the article and conducted the research.

When the manuscript is submitted to the journal, all authors should be aware of this and agree that the senior author will sign a copyright transfer form on their behalf.

In addition, any conflicts of interest related to the publication of a particular article should be disclosed by the authors.

If there is a significant error in their published article, authors should inform the editor(s) and work with the editor(s) to publish an erratum, addendum or retraction, as appropriate.

Obligations and role of the publisher

Publishing Guidelines

By accepting a manuscript, the publisher acquires all rights from the author, in particular the right to further reproduction for commercial purposes by photomechanical or other means. Detailed information on Nomos’ copyright policy can be found here

Nomos works with Portico to ensure long-term archiving and access to the Swiss Journal of Business.

Review Process

The quality of the articles published in the Swiss Journal of Business is ensured by a double-blind peer review process in accordance with internationally recognized standards. This procedure is designed to protect the anonymity of both authors and reviewers. If a reviewer is aware of the identity of at least one of the authors of the manuscript, he or she is obliged to inform the editors and declare any competing or conflicting interests.

Because the double-blind peer review process is critical to maintaining high publication standards, we rely on reviewers who are experts in the relevant academic field, usually with a business background. Reviewers are required to declare potential competing or conflicting interests. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for assessing whether these conflicts of interest may affect the quality of the review itself. The reviewers are instructed to assess the work impartially and objectively. If the reviewers discover during the review that they are not qualified to conduct the review (e.g. do not have the required expertise) or discover potential conflicts of interest or competing interests, they must notify the journal’s Editorial Team. Reviewers may not use any information from the ongoing review process to their advantage or to the advantage of a third party. This includes suggesting that authors refer to their own work or that of a colleague if this is not necessary. Any other ethical concerns should also be brought to the attention of the Editorial Team. Unless expressly permitted, reviewers must not involve a third party in the review process.

There are usually several rounds of double-blind peer review. As we aim to send the first round of reviews to the authors within three months, we kindly ask our reviewers to submit the review before the deadline, provided that the time constraint does not affect the quality of the review. Since the reviews must contain detailed points of criticism, cases in which the rules of good scientific practice have been violated are easily recognizable. The journal does not prescribe a particular format or style for the review. However, it is customary to send confidential comments to the editors with a recommendation to accept/revise/reject the manuscript. Reviewers are asked to provide comments and suggestions on the quality and accuracy of the study and should refrain from rewriting the manuscript to their liking. A carefully prepared review helps the authors to improve their work. Therefore, we expect constructive suggestions for improvement and clearly formulated comments for the authors and editors. The double-blind peer review must always adhere to the highest standards of scientific work and scientific integrity.
