About the Journal

Voluntaris is a scientifically oriented publication dedicated to providing information, fostering discussion and documenting developments in the field of voluntary services and civic engagement. It serves as a platform for stakeholders from academia, practice and politics, facilitating the exchange between academic and applied perspectives on voluntary services and civil society involvement.

Target Audience:

  • Academics: Scientists, educators, and students at universities and academic institutions engaged in topics related to voluntary services and civic engagement.
  • Practitioners: Employees and volunteers involved in organizations working in the contexts of voluntary services and civic engagement.
  • Leaders and Decision Makers: Managers and individuals addressing voluntary services and civic engagement topics in organizations, associations, ministries, political parties, churches and foundations, for example.
  • Volunteers and Enthusiasts: Former, current and prospective volunteers, as well as other interested individuals seeking deeper insights into these areas.

Articles

The journal features articles in four distinct sections:

  • Essays: Contributions with empirical, theoretical, application-oriented, or programmatic focus.
  • Debate and dialogue: Commentaries, opinions, normative discussions, responses or reactions to ongoing developments.
  • Documentations: Reports on conferences, meetings and evaluations.
  • Reviews: Reviews of books and studies relevant to the journal’s thematic scope.

The ‘Debate and dialogue’ section also includes the feature ‘Voluntaris asks…’, where a selected expert answers three to five questions on current developments in the field in each issue.

Main Topics

Each issue will have a thematic focus, featuring several articleson the chosen subject.  Additional general contributions complement the main theme. These main topics are announced via Call for Papers or on the website.

Call for Papers

Author Guidelines

Publishing Open Access

Voluntaris is not an open access journal. However, it is possible to publish individual articles in the journal open access by making the digital version freely available under a Creative Commons license chosen by the respective author(s). The publisher requires a fee to cover the publication costs (Article Processing Charge – APC) in the amount of 1,990.00 EUR (plus VAT). Many scientific institutions and science funding bodies provide corresponding funds for the publication of research results.

Review Process

All articles submitted to Voluntaris under the ‘Essays’ category are subject to a double-blind peer review process. Reviews are conducted  either by external experts or members of the editorial team. After submission, authors will be notified of the outcome, which could be: 1) Acceptance for direct publication, 2) Conditional acceptance requiring revisions, or 3) Rejection.
